For the last 40 years Scotwork have been examining one method by which we steer our way through inevitable conflicts, the art and skill of negotiation. Negotiation can help oil the wheels of life by recognising our differences and find a path by which we can get more of what we want.

For the last 3 years we have been blogging our musings on the issues of the day, the ones that have captured our imaginations and the ones that we feel could benefit from that art of negotiation. If you like we have taken real situations and thought through the options that may make a deal possible, or even just more likely. We have put these situations under the negotiators microscope.

Liar Liar Pants On Fire

“The trouble, Richard”, a prospective client once said to me, “is that I can get a better service elsewhere for less money” …the salesman’s worst nightmare! But I was desperate; I’d been trying to get this research proposal over the line for weeks and we really needed the revenue. I was ready to compromise and do (what I thought) was necessary. But that compromise (or unconditional concession as we professional negotiators like to call it) didn’t just cost me the arbitrary 15% discount to get the job. It set a precedent for subsequent jobs that overtime amounted to thousands of pounds.
